Focusing on Leadership Issues with LeaderPoint

BY JASON LADAY

Need a crash course in management? You can get it now at a discount.

The IEEE has joined with LeaderPoint, one of its Education Partners Program providers, to offer members a 10 percent discount on the company’s Executive Experience sessions. These are geared toward managers and scientific and technical experts who lead organizations or are responsible for a department or project. The five-day programs, which cover such topics as group dynamics and corporate strategy, aim to help participants manage more effectively.

“We believe that management and leadership are sciences and should be studied with the same rigor and discipline found in technical fields,” LeaderPoint President Mike Laddin says. “The skills and mind-set that lead to success in other specialized fields do not necessarily lead to success in management and leadership. That’s why our sessions focus only on management.”

COMING UP All sessions are held in Kansas City, Mo., with five scheduled between January and October. The sessions include a business simulation, which has participants working in groups to plan and execute a corporate strategy. Students learn about LeaderPoint’s 11 Commandments of Leadership, receive coaching from a management expert, get help with their classroom projects and, at the end, receive recommendations for further development.

LeaderPoint has worked with more than 750 companies—including Raytheon, Sprint, and 3M—“providing managers and technical experts with an approach to management that significantly improves the company’s results,” Laddin says.
